Building Sustainable Energy for Haut-Uele: 1MW Solar Project

At TMW SARLU, we are proud to be shaping the future of clean energy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Today, we are advancing one of our sustainable projects: the construction of a 1 MW solar power plant in Makoro, Faradje Territory, Haut-Uele Province.

A Partnership for Sustainable Development

This project is being carried out in partnership with Kibali Goldmine, and it reflects our shared commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. For us, this is more than just engineering—it is about making a real difference in people’s daily lives by bringing reliable electricity to areas that have long gone without.

Overcoming Challenges and Making Progress

We have faced challenges along the way. Administrative processes, environmental and social approvals for remote solar projects, and the complexity of building in a remote area all required careful planning. Yet, since officially launching in April 2025, our teams have made significant progress.

The platforms are complete, the steel structures are in place, and essential equipment—including panels, batteries, and cabling for solar power—has arrived on site. To protect the plant against the region’s heavy rains, we have also invested in strong civil works, from reinforced concrete foundations to drainage systems designed for long-term solar installations.

Every detail matters. For example, our battery foundations built to support loads of up to three tonnes each—an extra measure to ensure safety and long-term reliability. These are the kinds of decisions that define our approach: combining technical excellence with durability and foresight.

Powering Hundreds of Households

Once operational, this solar plant will deliver power to hundreds of households in Faradje Territory. We know that access to electricity can transform lives, and we are proud to help make that transformation possible. Our design allows flexibility: whether a household requires basic lighting or higher capacity for appliances powered by solar energy, the plant will meet diverse energy needs.

Showcasing Local Engineering Excellence

This project underscores the strength of local Congolese engineering for solar projects. With offices in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, and Kolwezi, our teams already support some of the country’s most important mining and infrastructure projects. The Makoro solar plant shows how our expertise can reach remote regions, delivering lasting benefits through solar energy.

We are working with determination to commission the plant by November 2025, including the construction of its substation for the Makoro solar plant. For us, success is not only measured in megawatts but in the brighter, more sustainable future this project will help create.
